Multisig (Multi-Signature)

A Bitcoin security scheme requiring multiple private keys to authorize a transaction, commonly used in m-of-n configurations like 2-of-3.

What is Multisig?

A Bitcoin security scheme requiring multiple private keys to authorize a transaction, commonly used in m-of-n configurations like 2-of-3. While Lygos respects the security benefits of multisig, DLCs offer a more advanced alternative. Unlike multisig, DLCs pre-sign all possible outcomes automatically, so no human coordination is needed for settlement. Multisig addresses 'who can move the funds' but still requires trust in the coordination process. DLCs address 'what happens to the funds' with cryptographic certainty, covering every possible outcome before collateral is committed.

Full Definition

Multi-signature (multisig) is a Bitcoin security model that requires multiple private keys to sign a transaction before it can be broadcast. In an m-of-n configuration, m signatures out of n total keys are required. For example, 2-of-3 multisig means any 2 of 3 keyholders must sign. In lending, Unchained Capital uses 2-of-3 multisig where the borrower holds one key, Unchained holds one, and a third-party key agent holds the third. This prevents any single party from unilaterally moving the Bitcoin. However, multisig requires human coordination to execute. Settlement, liquidation, and collateral return all require manual key-signing ceremonies.

How Lygos Uses This

While Lygos respects the security benefits of multisig, DLCs offer a more advanced alternative. Unlike multisig, DLCs pre-sign all possible outcomes automatically, so no human coordination is needed for settlement. Multisig addresses 'who can move the funds' but still requires trust in the coordination process. DLCs address 'what happens to the funds' with cryptographic certainty, covering every possible outcome before collateral is committed.

Why this matters for borrowers
